How to Add Captions to Instagram Reels
Add captions to Instagram Reels with Instagram or burn styled captions into your video before upload. Follow the PowerCut workflow and avoid unreadable text.
Quick Answer
You can add captions to a Reel inside Instagram or burn them into the video before upload. Instagram captions are fastest for a simple post; burned-in captions give you repeatable styling, positioning, keyword emphasis, and one reusable file. In PowerCut, open Captions, choose a preset, correct the transcript, keep text inside the safe area, save, and export the MP4 before uploading it to Instagram.
Captions make a Reel understandable when audio is unavailable, but adding words is only the first step. The text also needs to be accurate, readable, and clear of Instagram’s interface.
Method 1: add captions inside Instagram
Instagram’s available editing tools can vary by account, region, device, and app version. In the Reel composer, look for the captions or subtitle control, generate the transcript, then review the text before publishing.
This method is useful when:
- you need to publish quickly;
- native editing is enough for the post;
- you do not need the same captioned file elsewhere; and
- you are comfortable styling and checking each Reel in the app.
Do not assume automatic text is correct. Spoken brand names, people’s names, amounts, dates, and technical terms deserve a manual check.
Method 2: add styled captions before you upload
Burned-in captions become part of the exported video. They display consistently when the file is reposted, embedded, or watched outside Instagram.
Use this method when you want:
- the same visual identity across a series;
- control over font size, colours, outline, and position;
- selected words emphasised as they are spoken;
- different colours for detected speakers; or
- one captioned master for Reels, Shorts, TikTok, or another feed.
Add Reel captions with PowerCut
1. Prepare a vertical clip
Open a generated clip in the editor and choose Vertical 9:16. If the source is landscape, open Layout to choose Fit or Fill, crop the frame on the canvas, or analyse subject movement before using subject tracking.
Meta’s Reels ads creative guidance recommends vertical creative, quality audio, and keeping key creative elements in the safe zone. Although the page addresses ads, the safe-area principle is equally useful when organic Reel controls can cover text.
2. Choose a caption preset
Open Captions → Style and select a preset. Then use the Text tab to adjust font size, colours, outline, and position. PowerCut’s editor marks the caption preview as approximate, so perform a final check on the exported MP4.
3. Correct the transcript before styling details
Play the clip and compare every line with the audio. Prioritise:
- names and company names;
- numbers, prices, and percentages;
- acronyms and specialist vocabulary;
- words that change the meaning when misheard; and
- punctuation that changes the pace of a sentence.
Correctness helps accessibility, trust, search understanding, and any system that extracts meaning from the visible transcript.
4. Emphasise only the important words
In Captions → Highlights, turn on suggested key-word emphasis or select transcript words and highlight them manually. Pick one emphasis colour and size that still reads against the video.
If two or more speakers are detected, Captions → Speakers can assign a colour to each speaker. Use colour as a supporting cue, not the only way to tell speakers apart.
5. Check the safe area and readability
Preview the first, middle, and last caption groups. Look for:
- text hidden behind account details or action buttons;
- lines too close to an edge;
- low contrast over changing footage;
- too many words at once;
- highlighted text that competes with the subject; and
- caption timing that feels late or early.
PowerCut shows readability warnings under the preview. Follow the warning links, then check the exported file on a phone before posting.
6. Save, export, and review in Instagram
Click Save changes, then open Export. Download MP4 gets the file for the last saved version; Export MP4 creates a new file from saved changes and settings. Unsaved edits are not included.
Upload the MP4 to Instagram, preview the Reel with the interface visible, and add a useful written caption in the post composer. PowerCut does not currently schedule or publish to Instagram, so the final platform settings remain in Instagram.
Caption checklist for Reels
| Check | Pass condition |
|---|---|
| Accuracy | Names, numbers, and key claims match the audio |
| Legibility | Text is large enough and has adequate contrast |
| Placement | No important text sits under interface controls |
| Timing | Lines appear with the spoken phrase |
| Density | Each screen is readable before the next line appears |
| Brand | Font, colour, and emphasis are consistent across the series |
| Final file | The exported MP4 was reviewed on a phone |
Captions are not the same as the post caption
On-screen captions transcribe or summarise speech inside the video. The Instagram post caption sits below the Reel and can add context, sources, tags, or a call to action. Use both intentionally rather than copying a full transcript into the post caption.
