B-roll

B-roll is cutaway footage that plays over your clip while the speaker keeps talking. Open the B-Roll tab in the editor's left rail. It has four ways to add B-roll, and everything you add lands on the B-roll track on the timeline.

Every plan can use all four. The only difference between plans is how much new B-roll you can add each day.

The top of the B-Roll tab shows how many you have left today and when it resets. Your limit resets at midnight UTC, and the tab shows that time in your own time zone.

What counts:

  • Adding a stock video or photo counts as one.
  • Each moment placed by Add selected counts as one.
  • Each AI image made from a prompt counts as one, even if you don't place it.

What doesn't count:

  • Uploading your own footage.
  • Re-adding something that's already in your media.
  • Moving, trimming, duplicating, undoing or redoing.
  • An AI image that fails or that you cancel.

If you upgrade during the day, your new limit applies straight away, and what you've already added today still counts. B-roll never uses your upload hours.

Upload

  1. Open B-Roll and choose Upload.
  2. The first time, confirm you own the footage or have permission to use it.
  3. Drop a video (MP4, MOV or WebM) or an image (JPG, PNG or WebP), or click to choose one.
  4. Your uploads appear in a strip. Click one to add it at the playhead for 3 seconds, or over the words you selected.

Uploads never count toward your daily limit.

Stock

Stock videos and photos come from Pixabay. Videos are the default, and photos are the fallback when no video fits.

  1. Open B-Roll and choose Stock.
  2. Pick one of the keywords taken from your transcript, or type your own.
  3. Choose Videos or Photos. Results match your clip's shape, so a 9:16 clip gets portrait footage.
  4. Click a result to preview it and see who made it, then click Add.

You can also select words in the transcript, choose Add, then Stock B-Roll. The search starts with your words and the result covers exactly those words.

Attribution for stock footage

Stock footage is free to use under the Pixabay Content License, including in videos you post commercially. Pixabay's license doesn't require you to show who made an item inside your video.

PowerCut shows where each item comes from. You'll see a line like "Video by ana on Pixabay" on each search result and in the preview, and when you select a stock item on the timeline, with a link to its page.

Copy attribution in the export panel gives you one line per stock item in the clip, ready to paste into your post description if you'd like to.

Don't use stock that shows a brand or logo to promote goods or services, don't show people in a sensitive or misleading way, and don't suggest anyone in it endorses you.

AI B-roll (automatic)

  1. Open B-Roll and choose AI B-Roll (automatic).
  2. Click Find B-roll moments. PowerCut reads your transcript for moments a picture would help.
  3. Each moment shows its words, its time and a proposed visual: a stock video, a stock photo, or an AI image.
  4. Click Swap to see the next stock result, Generate instead to use an AI image, or Skip to drop the moment.
  5. Tick the moments you want and click Add selected. They're added in one step you can undo.

If you have fewer left today than you ticked, the button says so, for example "Add 2 of 3 — daily limit", and adds the first ones in time order.

AI B-roll (prompt)

  1. Open B-Roll and choose AI B-Roll (prompt). Or select words, choose Add, then AI B-Roll.
  2. Describe the image and choose Photoreal, Illustration or Cinematic.
  3. On Free you get one take per request. On Creator and Studio you can ask for one to four, and each take counts.
  4. Click a take to place it.

AI images are marked AI-made wherever they appear.

The B-roll track

The B-roll row appears on the timeline under the source row as soon as your clip has one B-roll item.

  • Drag an item to move it, or drag either edge to trim it. Snapping follows the Snap setting.
  • Two items can't overlap. If you drop one onto another, it moves to just after it.
  • Select an item to open it in the B-Roll tab: Replace, Fit or Fill, position and size, Slow zoom on images, and audio for videos.
  • Videos start Muted so the speaker stays audible.
  • A stock video shorter than its slot holds on its last frame.
  • Press Delete or ⌫ to remove an item. Undo brings it back.

B-roll never changes your clip's length or cut timing. Captions and your hook stay on top of B-roll, and on Free the watermark stays on top of everything.
