Captions and styling

Choose a caption style

  1. Click Captions in the left rail.
  2. On the Style tab, pick a style. Choose None to turn captions off.

The caption preview is approximate. Your export may look slightly different.

Adjust caption text

On the Text tab you can change the font size, letter spacing, Uppercase, Text colour, Outline colour and Outline thickness, shadow, position, and the Colour of the word being spoken and Size of the word being spoken.

  • Font size is in pixels on the export, and text scales automatically if you change the aspect ratio.
  • Reset to style default next to a setting undoes just that setting. Reset all to style defaults undoes them all.
  • If you switch styles, your changes stay and everything else updates to match the new style.

Emphasise key words

Suggested emphasis is on the Creator and Studio plans.

  1. Open Captions and choose Highlights.
  2. Turn on Use suggestions to emphasise suggested key words.
  3. Set the Emphasis colour and Emphasis scale.

To colour words yourself, select them in the Storyline and click Highlight. If a word is both highlighted and emphasised, it uses the highlight colour and the spoken-word size.

Colour each speaker

Speaker colours are on the Creator and Studio plans, and need two or more detected speakers.

  1. Open Captions and choose Speakers.
  2. Turn on Give each speaker a colour and pick a colour for each speaker.
  3. Click Apply speaker colours.

Each speaker keeps the same colour, even if you rearrange the clip. Colours that are too close to each other are rejected.

Readability warnings

Under the caption settings, PowerCut warns you when captions may be hard to read, for example when the text doesn't stand out from the background, the outline is too thin, or captions may be covered by app buttons. Click View to see the warnings. Most warnings link straight to the setting that fixes them.

Edit caption words

  • To fix a misheard word, select it in the Storyline, click Edit, type the correct text and click Apply edit. The audio doesn't change.
  • To change when a word's caption appears, select one word and click Adjust timing. Times are in milliseconds from the start of the original video. Tick Also move the cut only if you also want to change the video there, which changes your clip's length.
